Maternity Photography
Whether this is your first pregnancy or last, a maternity photography session documents this stage of the journey to parenthood.
A maternity photography session is the ideal way to capture the anticipation of getting ready for a new family member. A maternity photography session documents the joy of siblings being promoted to older siblings, love multiplying and abounding, and the tender moments that accompany each pregnancy. Your family unit will never be at this stage again, so holding the pregnancy in time through a maternity photography session is a fantastic way by which to remember it.
In a maternity photography session, I enjoy capturing siblings' excitement or lack-there-of for the new teeny, tiny human joining the family. If you are a couple becoming parents for the first time, I absolutely love to photograph that unbridled excitement and the love between the soon-to-be parents.
A maternity photography session almost always takes place at a park local to West Hartford, CT, or Hartford County. However, for those colder months, a session can easily be accommodated at my studio located near West Hartford Center. Each maternity session begins with a phone consultation followed by an in-person consultation, where we begin to plan out your session.
The in-person consultation is where we can lock down a location and the colors that you imagine for your session. We will discuss your family dynamics and the photos you're most excited about capturing. We will chat about where you imagine these images being featured in your home. Do you want a multitude of small prints framed and matted to museum quality, or would an heirloom album better suit your family’s needs as a touchstone to which you can keep returning? During the consultation, we will fully discuss pricing and packages. I love seeing my clients get excited about seeing their photographs on their own walls.
A few maternity photography questions…
Questions I get asked most frequently before a maternity session are what if it rains on the date of our session? Just like children, the weather is not always predictable, especially here in the Northeast. If we need to reschedule your maternity session, it's not a problem, as I take on a very limited amount of maternity sessions a month to account for the weather’s unpredictability.
Another question that’s asked often is, what should we wear? Great question! I am notorious for struggling with what to wear on a day-to-day basis, so I can’t imagine the stress of outfitting a family for a maternity photography session. We go over styling and clothing during the in-person consultation, but I always recommend choosing a color palette and building outfits around that. Textures and layers are always welcome. A quick outfit change is always welcome as well. I do not recommend more than two outfit changes for a maternity photography session. Your maternity session fee allows me to make a custom floral crown for your session if you so desire or rent a maternity gown.
Another frequent question I get is can I bring a prop or two for our session? The answer to this question is always a resounding yes. I love making each maternity photography session as personal as possible.
The final question I get asked most frequently is what the process is after the photo session is completed. Typically, the turnaround time for a maternity session is eight to ten business days. We will figure out a time for you to come and review your photos in an ordering session. This is always clients' favorite part of the process because they get to see their photos for the first time and see mock-ups of framed products or canvases on their walls. And if wall space is an issue, I always recommend a custom heirloom album. An album is a product that you can keep coming back to and enjoy with family for generations to come.
So, why maternity photography?
Simply because these photographs celebrate this stage of your pregnancy and your growing family…your family will never be at this stage again. Your life will never look like this again. Not just having someone document the everyday occurrences but having a professional photographer take that moment and turn it into a cherished memory is something truly special.
